Leonard Cohen Sings To A Different Beat

While the visual aspects of this video are suboptimal, it captures Leonard Cohen1 singing “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye” in a rhythm distinct from any other performance I have heard.

For purposes of comparison, a video of a  more typical performance of the song (from the 2013 Rotterdam concert) is also embedded below.

6-Camera Composite Video: Leonard Cohen Performs Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye – Rotterdam 2013

6ggoodI’m not looking for another as I wander in my time,
walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme
you know my love goes with you as your love stays with me,
it’s just the way it changes, like the shoreline and the sea,
but let’s not talk of love or chains and things we can’t untie,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye.

This composite is formed from six videos shot live at the Sept 18, 2013 Leonard Cohen Rotterdam concert by albertnoonan; gosiorka; LisWantTwo; MaartenLC; OscarOoij; and Wirebirds. The editor of the final product is alanm5049

Worthy of special note are exquisite violin interludes by Alex Bublitchi.at the opening of the song and again a 2:38.

Maziar Bahari Thanks Leonard Cohen For Inner Peace Afforded By ”Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye”

quoteup2
One of the songs that kept playing in my head in Evin [Prison], that helped me tune out what was happening and find some peace inside myself—”Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye,” by Leonard Cohen:

I loved you in the morning,
Our kisses deep and warm,
Your hair upon the pillow
Like a sleepy golden storm.

Those lines became … part of a whole musical refuge of lyrics and melodies. Of such stuff is survival made. Thank you, Mr. Cohen.quotedown2

nowayYes, many loved before us, I know that we are not new
In city and in forest they smiled like me and you
But let’s not talk of love or chains and things we can’t untie
Your eyes are soft with sorrow

Leonard Cohen’s Notes On Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye: “Wrong Room…Wrong Woman”

quoteup2
This song [Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye] arises from an over-used bed in the Penn Terminal Hotel in 1966. The room is too hot. I can’t open the windows. I am in the midst of a bitter quarrel with a blonde woman. The song is half-written in pencil but it protects us as we manoeuvre, each of us, for unconditional victory. I am in the wrong room. I am with the wrong woman.quotedown2
