Hey, We Met That Cat Before He Was In The New Yorker: That’s Jackson – And Isn’t That Leonard Cohen With Him?

The Cat Not In The Hat

In August 2014, Duchess and I spent a sunny Los Angeles afternoon with Leonard Cohen and his personal assistant, Kezban Özcan. When I asked about a feline on the premises that had meandered into our photos (see below), Kezban explained that the cat, who had previously roamed the neighborhood, had “got himself adopted” by our favorite Canadian singer-songwriter-icon and self-professed canine lover. Kezban later wrote:

The cat’s name is Jackson. (but I like pronouncing it with a French accent, I have a feeling he likes that:)

So, when I saw the photo (shown atop this post) featured in David Remnick’s Oct 17, 2016 New Yorker profile of Leonard, Leonard Cohen Makes It Darker, I contacted Kezban, who assures us that the cat in the New Yorker shot is indeed the same (albeit somewhat huskier version of) the cat we met in 2014, diplomatically noting that “he is well taken care of.”
