A Concert of Songs from Songwriters On Songwriting by Paul Zollo – L.A. May 21, 2017

Introduction: Ongoing Cohencentric readers will be familiar with the Leonard Cohen interview published in Paul Zollo’s Songwriters On Songwriting, which is, in my assessment, the most insightful and enlightening exposition of Leonard’s songwriting tactics and principles available. (Excerpts from Paul’s work are frequently featured on this site; see, for example, “Before I can discard the verse, I have to write it…” Leonard Cohen on songwriting and “First we killed the Lord & then we stole the blues” Why Leonard Cohen Discarded This Verse From “Democracy”) The May 21st event described below is enticing (albeit not enticing enough to lure me from Chapel Hill NC to the pleasure dome that is LA).  I am posting this information for the benefit of those more geographically proximal to the venue.

Songs Songs Songs: A Concert Of Songs From Songwriters On Songwriting & More Songwriters On Songwriting By Paul Zollo – L.A. May 21, 2017

Featured: Paul Zollo, legendary poet Stephen Kalinich, Suzy Williams, Tim Tedrow, Bliss Bowen, Danny Shorago (of The Fuxedos), The Wild Mountain Mystics, Smokey Miles, Jeff Gold, Fernando Perdomo, Neil Rosengarden, Fuzzbee Morse, Emily Zuzik, Cynthia Brando, and more.

A reprise of Songs, Songs, Songs, a concert of great performers all performing classic songs discussed in Paul Zollo’s book Songwriters On Songwriting and its recently-published sequel More Songwriters On Songwriting.

With songs by Sammy Cahn, Leiber & Stoller, Bob Dylan, Chrissie Hynde, Stephen Stills, Don McLean, Townes Van Zandt, Brian Wilson, Neil Young, Randy Newman, Elvis Costello, Woody Guthrie, Livingston & Evans, Willie Dixon, John Prine, Paul Simon, Donovan, Robbie Robertson and more.

Zollo will share stories from the songwriters about each song from his book, songs that span the full range of American music, including blues, jazz, rock & roll, musical theater, folk, country and more.

Called “the songwriter’s bibles,” these two volumes are used as textbooks in every college which teachers songwriting, and are considered the essential books on the art and craft of songwriting. They feature intimate and substantial discussions with many of the world’s greatest songwriters, including Sammy Cahn, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen, Carole King, Brian Wilson, Randy Newman, R.E.M., Green Day, Squeeze, Donovan, Loretta Lynn, Aimee Mann, Steely Dan, Chrissie Hynde, Elvis Costello and more. When “Hamilton” songwriter Lin Manuel Miranda was asked to name his favorite books on songwriting, he singled out Songwriters On Songwriting. UK’s MOJO magazine wrote, “Zollo’s songtalk provides a feast.”

Signed copies of both books will be available for sale.
