Leonard Cohen Performs Joan of Arc Featuring Sharon Robinson – Bonn 1980

Leonard Cohen on Joan Of Arc:

It is just a song about the total gift of total giving and the total consummation of the spirit in that kind of experience. It takes in the whole shot to be man and woman.1

For more about the background of Leonard Cohen’s Joan Of Arc is available at About Those Songs On Leonard Cohen’s Can’t Forget Album: Joan of Arc.

Other Leonard Cohen  performances of Joan Of Arc featuring various backup singers are available at Joan of Arc – The Concert Performances.

The 1980 Leonard Cohen Bonn Concert Recording

As far as I can determine, no recording of the Nov 4, 1980 Leonard Cohen concert at the Beethovenhalle in Bonn, Germany has been available online – until now. A tape of one hour of the show has emerged, thanks to the generosity of a friend from Bonn, who recorded this song and 11 others with the permission of Leonard Cohen and his sound engineer. (The other songs from this concert have been posted or will be posted soon; all recordings from this show are collected at .)

The supporting musicians for the 1980 Tour follow:

  • Sharon Robinson – vocals
  • Roscoe Beck – bass guitar
  • John Bilezikjian – oud, mandolin
  • Bill Ginn – keyboards
  • Raffi Hakopian – violin
  • Steve Meador – drums
  • Paul Ostermayer – wind
  • Mitch Watkins – electric guitar

It is wonderful to hear these songs sung so long ago. Always loved Joan Of Arc but don’t think I have heard it with Sharon. Thank you Allan.

Thanks Allan, another favourite song of mine!

Marie, Sharon sang Joan of Arc with Leonard on the 1980 tour. As well as this one at Bonn, I know for sure she sang it at Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Hamburg and San Sebastian and possibly other venues too.

As we know, Jennifer Warnes sang her part during the 1979 tour (and an epic solo of the whole song in 1992 in Belgium). Anjani Thomas also sang her part on the 1985 tour.
Seems the girls all had a turn including Hattie Webb on the last tour.

Ah, and how could I possibly forget to mention those wonderful tones of Julie Christensen in her part of this song in the tours of 1988 and 1993!

Hi Bev, you are right, of course. I think I do remember now Jennifer Warnes singing it and also Anjani. Julie Christensen was the the most memorable for me. Leonard always had the very best backup singers didn’t he.:-)
