Video: Leonard Cohen Performs Hey That`s No Way To Say Goodbye, Featuring Alex Bublitchi – Paris 2012

Leonard Cohen – Hey That`s No Way To Say Goodbye

I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm
Your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm
Yes, many loved before us, I know that we are not new
In city and in forest they smiled like me and you
But now it’s come to distances and both of us must try
Your eyes are soft with sorrow
Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye

Video Delight: Leonard Cohen Performs I Tried To Leave You, Featuring Band Members In Spotlight – Paris 2012

Leonard Cohen – I Tried To Leave You
Paris: Sept 29, 2012

During Leonard’s final tours, I Tried To Leave You was the song that offered his band members the opportunity to show off their talents. While all the spotlight solos are a treat, the performances by Alex Bublitchi (beginning at 2:20), Sharon Robinson (beginning at 3:38), and – especially – Rafael Gayol (beginning at 6:12) are particularly noteworthy.

Note: The best available video of each of the 40 songs performed during the 2012 Leonard Cohen Old Ideas World Tour can be found at the Best Of 2012 Leonard Cohen Tour Video Setlist.

Look Who Made It Into Sharon Robinson’s On Tour With Leonard Cohen: Mitch, Alex, Roscoe, Hattie, Charley, Neil, Dominique Issermann, Lorca, DrHGuy, Duchess, The Guy Who Carries Leonard Cohen’s Guitar…

I continue to be delighted by the images in Sharon Robinson’s On Tour With Leonard Cohen, which Vogue described as “a book of photographs, 92 percent of which were shot on an iPhone, which gives them a curious sense of intimacy, spontaneity, and complicity, echoing, in a way, the particular closeness of Ms. Robinson and Mr. Cohen’s relationship.”  Now, most folks buy this book because of the photos featuring Leonard Cohen, but there are other treats: many, many shots of other members of the Unified Heart Touring Company (past and present), family, strangers, local scenes, and the occasional hangers-on who show up at soundcheck in Austin.

Brilliant Photos: The 2012 Leonard Cohen Paris Concerts Through The Lens Of Maarten Massa Leonard Cohen

Maarten Massa reliably delivers stellar photos of Leonard Cohen concerts, and his shots of the September 28, 29, & 30, 2012 Olympia shows in Paris are no exception. Worthy of special note are

  • Perhaps the best 2012 Tour photo of Charley Webb I’ve seen
  • An outstanding shot of a happy Roscoe Beck
  • A pristine, all too rare photo of the usually camouflaged Rafael Gayol
  • A closeup of Leonard Cohen performing on Jew’s harp

“Here’s a song for the people of New Orleans” Leonard Cohen Performs Banjo – Amsterdam 2012

Featuring Neil Larsen, Alex Bublitchi, & Sharon Robinson

Leonard rarely performed Banjo in concert. In fact, the only other videotaped performance I’ve found was at the Aug 14, 2012 Ghent show: Video: Leonard Cohen’s Touching Performance Of Banjo – Ghent 2012

Photos Of Note: 2013 Leonard Cohen Hamburg Concert

These striking photos were taken at the July 14, 2013 Leonard Cohen Hamburg show by Uwe & Susanne Schrade. A report on that concert by Uwe Schrade is available at “Outstanding And Very, Very Beautiful” – Reporting On The 2013 Leonard Cohen Hamburg Concert From The First Row.

2012 Leonard Cohen Lisbon Concert Photos – Neil Larsen’s Accordion Hands Close-up, Alex Bublitchi’s Tie Inspection, & More

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of shots showing Leonard Cohen in concert standing erect, kneeling, crouching, etc. And, it’s easy to find images of classic scenes – e.g., Javier Mas performing his dramatic solo at the beginning of “Who By Fire” or Sharon Robinson powerfully singing “Alexandra Leaving.” But only on Cohencentric can one count on finding these and other popular photos alongside such rarely published but endearing images as a closeup of Neil Larsen’s hands playing the accordion on “The Partisan,” Alex Bublitchi, the intense violinist, who appears to be either carefully examining his necktie or performing the magic pencil illusion with his bow, and some wonderful looks at Roscoe Beck and Mitch Watkins in action. All of these photos, both the conventional and wonderfully idiosyncratic poses, were taken by Martine Nevens.
