I continue to be delighted by the images in Sharon Robinson’s On Tour With Leonard Cohen, which Vogue described as “a book of photographs, 92 percent of which were shot on an iPhone, which gives them a curious sense of intimacy, spontaneity, and complicity, echoing, in a way, the particular closeness of Ms. Robinson and Mr. Cohen’s relationship.” Now, most folks buy this book because of the photos featuring Leonard Cohen, but there are other treats: many, many shots of other members of the Unified Heart Touring Company (past and present), family, strangers, local scenes, and the occasional hangers-on who show up at soundcheck in Austin.
- Perhaps the best 2012 Tour photo of Charley Webb I’ve seen
- An outstanding shot of a happy Roscoe Beck
- A pristine, all too rare photo of the usually camouflaged Rafael Gayol
- A closeup of Leonard Cohen performing on Jew’s harp

Featuring Neil Larsen, Alex Bublitchi, & Sharon Robinson
Leonard rarely performed Banjo in concert. In fact, the only other videotaped performance I’ve found was at the Aug 14, 2012 Ghent show: Video: Leonard Cohen’s Touching Performance Of Banjo – Ghent 2012

These striking photos were taken at the July 14, 2013 Leonard Cohen Hamburg show by Uwe & Susanne Schrade. A report on that concert by Uwe Schrade is available at “Outstanding And Very, Very Beautiful” – Reporting On The 2013 Leonard Cohen Hamburg Concert From The First Row.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of shots showing Leonard Cohen in concert standing erect, kneeling, crouching, etc. And, it’s easy to find images of classic scenes – e.g., Javier Mas performing his dramatic solo at the beginning of “Who By Fire” or Sharon Robinson powerfully singing “Alexandra Leaving.” But only on Cohencentric can one count on finding these and other popular photos alongside such rarely published but endearing images as a closeup of Neil Larsen’s hands playing the accordion on “The Partisan,” Alex Bublitchi, the intense violinist, who appears to be either carefully examining his necktie or performing the magic pencil illusion with his bow, and some wonderful looks at Roscoe Beck and Mitch Watkins in action. All of these photos, both the conventional and wonderfully idiosyncratic poses, were taken by Martine Nevens.

Nuances Of Note
None of these items, one could argue, is important; that is, I would counter, why they are fun.
- Hattie Webb’s hat
- Leonard Cohen sans suit but equipped with fedora
- Leonard Cohen absolutely focused, singing about dancing to a “burning violin” while kneeling at the feet of Alex Bublitchi, undeterred by the violinist attending to his instrument or the crew member hustling across the stage
- A possible kneeling version of the Bercy Back-Flap at 2:00, followed by an OK signal at 2:20
- The toothpick expertly wielded by Rafael Bernardo Gayol
- A whispered remark to Mr Cohen at 3:42 evoking broad smiles
- The song ending, atypically for a soundcheck, with applause to which the Canadian singer-songwriter responds with a bow, another smile, and a wave

Gwen Langford, web master of Gwen’s Leonard Cohen Journey, graciously allowed me to filch photos from her own 2013 Radio City Music Hall Leonard Cohen concert albums. Worthy of special note are lovely photos of Charley & Hattie Webb, the shot of Mitch Watkins that not only shows him at work but also displays his 2013 upgrade to a red velvet chair, three impressive images of Alex Bublitchi, and the sequence of photos depicting Leonard Cohen’s elbow keyboard run.

Photos by Szilvia Szanto. The captions, especially those pertaining to the backflips performed by Javier Mas, are entirely my own fault.
