How To Make A Big, Way Cool Leonard Cohen Graphic – Cheap

Home-brewed Leonard Cohen graphic on DrHGuy's wall

The Leonard Cohen Crafts & Activities Club:
DIY Leonard Cohen Wall Art

The Leonard Cohen Crafts & Activities Club: Games and projects for Leonard Cohen fans. Think of this as Vacation Bible School for Cohenites or an online Camp Sunshine. Today’s project is creating an impressively large Leonard Cohen graphic from items found around your house (i.e., cheap stuff).

Skill Level Required:

If DrHGuy, whose assigned role in elementary school class art projects was restricted by institutional fiat to passing out the construction paper, can do it, you can do it.

Cost Of Materials:

If you own or can borrow a computer and printer, expenses are limited to the cost of the sheets of paper and printer ink used (see discussion below) and the materials used to display the completed piece. DrHGuy used stock from his own office supplies, restricting new purchases to a $1.11 bottle of Elmer’s glue.

Time Required:

The time needed to complete this project varies widely. Once the source graphic was selected, DrHGuy took less than an hour to have his proof of concept project hanging on the wall. DrHGuy’s sample project, however, was small (44″ X 32″ – 16 sheets of paper); large projects may involve hundreds of sheets of paper, expanding the time requirement dramatically. Also, DrHGuy did not spend time reading the incredibly detailed instructions.

Individuals For Whom The Project Is Designed:

  • Leonard Cohen fans who would like a large image of Leonard Cohen for their walls but have already spent all their discretionary income, the mortgage payment, the kids’ tuition, and the loose change under the couch cushions on tickets to World Tour concerts, Leonard Cohen DVDs, Unified Heart signet rings, …
  • Children of Leonard Cohen fans who feel obligated to give their parents a gift even though Mom and/or Dad have dissipated their inheritance to purchase tickets to World Tour concerts, Leonard Cohen DVDs, Unified Heart signet rings, …1
  • Those who are not fans of Leonard Cohen but who are nonetheless conjoined in a romantic relationship of the sort that implicitly includes gift-exchange responsibilities with someone of the Cohenite persuasion who has siphoned off the funds in the jointly held Christmas club savings account to buy World Tour concerts, Leonard Cohen DVDs, Unified Heart signet rings, …

Solving The Leonard Cohen Lyrical Crossword

The clues and answers for this crossword are directly derived from the lyrics and titles of Leonard Cohen songs (OK, one Cohen book title sneaked into the puzzle as well). Only a couple of the songs used could be described as possibly obscure.1

Please Note:
1. This crossword was created in 2010 so songs released after 2010 are not included

2. The 27-Down (as marked on right) clue is incorrect; it should read “It feels so good in the kitchen”

Leonard Cohen Is A (Paper) Doll

I love your body and your spirit and your clothes

  – From “First We Take Manhattan” by Leonard Cohen

Dressing – And Undressing – Leonard Cohen

Eva M, a member of the Leonard Cohen Forum, offers both an apposite commentary on Leonard Cohen’s style and an entertaining activity for fans  in the form of a well-executed, affecting, unique   paper doll set she created.

The Leonard Cohen paper doll set was originally submitted as an entry in the contest sponsored by the German edition of Rolling Stone to send a “passionate fan” to Paris for the Old Ideas preview. The image atop this post was, in fact, first published at the German Rolling Stone Facebook page (January 3, 2012) with this caption:

A self designed Doll by Leonard Cohen is just a post that we received in the course of the Leonard Cohen contest. Until tomorrow, you can take part – and then we are faced with the difficult task to pick a winner from all the photos, cover songs, stories and poems… [computer powered translation from German to English]

As part of this project Eva M taught herself enough technology to create a flash version of Dress Up Leonard Cohen. (The image of the flash game is shown below; to play the flash version itself, go to the link.)

For those who adhere to traditional forms, Eva M offers these instructions:

Print it  [the paper version] in A3 size, take your scissors and have fun.
